Bayt al-Fatwa is an independent scholarly institution dedicated to issuing non-binding legal opinions (fatwas) grounded in traditional Islamic legal methodology to help provide practical guidance for Muslims in their day-to-day lives.

Etiquette Of Issuing Fatwas

Issuing fatwas and providing guidance for the Muslim community is a sacred trust that is not to be taken lightly. The Prophet of Islam said, "I was only sent to refine human character (Ahmad)." In this light, these are some of the etiquettes that govern our work:

Adab - Arabic Calligraphy

A Mufti Must Be

  • Sincere and God-fearing
  • Display patience and wisdom
  • Maintain integrity throughout the fatwa process
  • Be properly trained and licensed in the craft of fatwa
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Speak truthfully and avoid extremism.

A Questioner (Mustafti) Must

  • Be honest in stating all the facts of their case.
  • Show respect for the Mufti and their craft.
  • Understand that each Mufti has their own process of arriving at valid opinions.
  • Respect the time and effort that goes into the fatwa process.
  • Avoid "fatwa shopping" and reflect on the answer given.
  • Hold the Mufti in good regard even if there is a difference of opinion.
